Fish Farm and
Tilapia Hatchery

We have been raising fish, here at Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, for over 50 years. During the last 20 years, we have undertaken to modernize all of our facilities and techniques, until today, we are at the forefront of fish production in Israel.

Our strengths are in the following areas:

1. We are the largest hatchery of Tilapia in Israel, with a production capacity close to 30 million fingerlings per year. Recently, we added to our production capability a greenhouse for spawning, which allows us to provide fingerlings, independent of the season, during every month of the year.

Production in the hatchery follows two tracks:

Spawning under natural conditions in man-made earth ponds.
Spawning within an enclosed, controlled environment in concrete pools.

The care and raising of the fry is carried out entirely within enclosed concrete pools. When they reach between 0.2-0.7 grams, with almost 100% male, the fingerlings are ready for sale. During the 15 years that we have been selling Tilapia fingerlings, most have been sold within Israel, although we also fulfil orders for shipment abroad.

Types of fish that we produce:

Hybrid Tilapia from male T. Auria and female T. Nilotica.
Red Tilapia, that have undergone rigorous selection for color and size performance, here at the farm.

We are also able to provide brood stock for spawning.

Six years ago, we built an enclosed, recirculating system for the grow-out of Tilapia. The system was designed to produce 100 tons per year. We raise Red Tilapia, introduced into the system at 50 grams and grown-out to a market size of 500 grams.
Currently we are exploring the possibilities of building an additional site or of expanding the production capabilities of our current site.

Here at the Sde Eliyahu Fish Farm and Tilapia Hatchery, our real strength lies in our personnel. There is a core of 4 experienced members, each with 20-35 years of work at the farm. They are guiding a group of younger members, who come from Israel, Europe and the United States, bringing with them varied experiences and interests. This the next generation will help us into the 21st century.

We continue to maintain and expand our connections with fish producers and research institutes both here and abroad, principally in the United States and Europe.
